Translation Group
The Rebellious Encounter is a DIY camp. Everybody is invited to feel responsible, also for translation during the camp. We would love to see many of you participating and contributing. As the Translation Working Group, we provide you with some orientation and a basic infrastructure for doing so:
- At the Infopoint you can find buttons in different colours with different languages written on them. You can pin a button to your clothes for every language that you speak. There are buttons with a white rim, which you can take if you speak a language fluently (and may be willing to translate e.g. during workshops).
- If you need translation, we would encourage you to look for others who need the same kind of translation before going to a workshop. Then you can try to find a translator – the buttons can help you with that. If you happen to not find anybody you can of course also ask workshop participants at the beginning of the workshop.
- Silent translation, through whispering, is a good option for workshops if few people need translation. In assemblies and possibly also if larger groups of people need translation, you may want to use the so called “spiders”. They are technical support for interpreting. Here, a translator speaks into a microphone, while several others can listen to the translation over individual headphones. Please do not forget that translation goes two ways: on the one hand it facilitates understanding the conversations in the larger group, on the other its a means of facilitating participation of people who do not share the groups prevailing language.
- At the infopoint you can find a board which allows you to offer and ask for translation. You may also ask people at the infopoint, in case you have any difficulties relating to translation.
Finally, we would like to invite you to make sure that everybody in your group (also outside of workshops) is able to follow the conversation, and to consider changing to a different language should this not be the case. Again, the buttons may help you find a common language.
